The Books I Keep Coming Back To — and Why I Finally Wrote Them Down

One of the questions I get more than almost any other — in sessions, after sessions, sometimes in a text from a client who just had a breakthrough on their drive home — is some version of this: is there something I can read about this?
And I love that question. I really do. Because it tells me something important about the person asking it. It tells me they're not just showing up to sessions and waiting for something to happen to them. They're in it. They want to keep going even when we're not in the room together. That kind of between-session growth is often where some of the most meaningful shifts happen — quietly, in ordinary moments, when something on a page suddenly makes sense of something you've been carrying for a long time.
So I've been meaning to do this for a while. And I finally did it.
I put together a curated reading list — books I return to again and again, both in my work with clients and in my own life. These aren't books I found on a list somewhere and thought looked good. They're books I've sat with. Books I've recommended hundreds of times. Books that have changed the way I understand relationships, boundaries, grief, shame, ADHD, betrayal, parenting, and what it means to just be a human being trying to figure things out.
Some of them are clinical and research-grounded. Some of them are personal and raw. Some are picture books for kids, because the people I work with aren't just individuals — they're parents, partners, siblings, and children too. And some of them I recommend not because everything is falling apart, but because growth doesn't only happen in crisis. Sometimes you're just ready to go a little deeper, and having the right book in your hands at the right moment can open something up that nothing else quite reaches.
